The use and handling of pesticides at the University can only be performed by New York State certified commercial pesticide applicators or technicians in accordance with state and federal regulations and must incorporate Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices.  Only pesticides registered for use in New York State can be applied.

Environmental Health and Safety Services coordinates the University’s pesticide compliance activities including regulatory reporting and recordkeeping.  EHSS also provides pesticide compliance guidance to the University community and responds to pesticide related inquiries.

NYS certified pesticide applicators applying pesticides at Syracuse University are required to provide twenty-four (24) hour advanced notice to EHSS prior to making a pesticide application and must ensure that EHSS is provided with a copy of the product label and Safety Data Sheet for each pesticide applied.  If the pesticide application will be made at or within 150 feet of a child care facility, seventy-two (72) hour advanced notice must be provided to EHSS to ensure compliance with New York State’s parental notification requirements.

Notification of a planned pesticide application should be made using the EHSS pesticide application notification form.

NYS certified pesticide applicators applying pesticides at Syracuse University are required to maintain records of all pesticide applications made and submit their application records to EHSS annually.  In accordance with NYS reporting requirements, EHSS compiles and submits an annual report to DEC identifying all pesticide applications made at the University.
