Hydrofluoric Acid

Hydrofluoric acid (HF) is a highly toxic and corrosive liquid. Exposure to HF can cause severe tissue damage and can be fatal if not immediately treated. Symptoms of HF exposure may not immediately appear. It is important to seek first aid and medical treatment if exposure to HF is suspected. For emergency assistance contact the Department of Public Safety at 315.443.2224.

All researchers using HF must:

  • Complete EHSS’ online hydrofluoric acid training module in addition to EHSS’ general laboratory safety training.
  • Review and follow their laboratory’s HF standard operating procedure (SOP).
  • Confirm an HF spill kit is present in their laboratory including 2.5% calcium gluconate cream and calcium carbonate powder for neutralization.
  • Use a buddy system. HF should not be handled while working alone.
  • Decontaminate work surfaces at the end of the procedure using a 10 % calcium carbonate solution.
  • Wear HF appropriate personal protective equipment including:
    • Goggles
    • Face shield
    • HF resistant gloves that cover the hands, wrist, and forearms
    • Lab coat
    • Chemicals resistant apron
