Laboratory personnel are required to wear appropriate eye and/or face protection anytime they may be potentially exposed to eye and face hazards. Examples of eye and face hazards include flying objects/particles, hot sparks, liquid chemicals, acids or caustic liquids, chemical gases or vapors, injurious light radiation, etc.
Please refer to the resources below to help determine, select, and use appropriate eye and face protection for laboratory operations.

DETERMINE – Hazard Specific Recommendations for Eye & Face Protection
SELECT – Reference the recommended Eye and Face Protection Chart below when making your selection.
Safety Glasses | Safety glasses effectively protect the eyes from flying object/particles, but are less effective at protecting the eyes from chemical splashes. Safety glasses must: • Have frames constructed of metal or plastic • Have impact-resistant lenses. • Have side protection • Comply with ANSI standard Z87.1
Safety Goggles | Safety goggles have a tight fitting seal to the face to better protect against liquids, vapors and gases. Safety goggles must: • Completely cover wearer’s eyes • Fit tight to the wear’s face • Comply with ANSI standard Z87.1
Face Shield | Face shields must always be worn with safety glasses/googles. Face shields provide a second layer of protection when handling large quantities chemicals or reactive substances.
