In the event of a hazardous material spill or other laboratory emergency, the following procedure should be followed:
- Evacuate: Immediately notify personnel in the affected area and evacuate the area.
- Notify: Call DPS at 315.443.2224 from a safe location outside of the affected area.
- Stay: in the safe location to meet emergency responders.
- Decontaminate: Individuals exposed to a hazardous material should remove contaminated clothing and wash contaminated body area(s) with water.
- Do not re-enter the affected area until cleared to do so by EHSS or emergency response personnel.
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the laboratory’s Principal Investigator must be notified immediately of any incident or emergency. DPS will dispatch the appropriate emergency responders including EHSS as necessary. The PI is responsible for notifying their department chair, and the college’s associate dean of research if the incident occurs in a research laboratory. The PI is also responsible for confirming EHSS has been notified in event of a serious laboratory incident.
